Paint -- Urethane over Enamel over urethan
Permalink

I painted my engine with VHT brunt copper engine paint and covered that with VHT engine clear coat.

Looks great

When I installed the engine I put a few scratches in it. So I tried to use the brunt copper to touch it up.

It wrinkled.

I found out that the color paint is Urethane and the clear is Enamel
I am not sure why the enamel clear coat went over the Urethane color coat fine but the Urethane color will not go over the Enamel clear without wrinkling.

Its painted now so there is no going back.

Anyone know if there is something I can do to make the color Urethane stick and not wrinkle when put it over the Enamel (touching up little scratches)

That is weird, why would they use different kinds of paint? I tried VHT and didn't have very good luck with but that was on the exhaust which get hotter than the block.

The paints aren't compatible. Used to be you could spray synthetic enamel over acrylic lacquer but you couldn't spray acrylic lacquer over synthetic enamel unless the enamel was completely dry which takes a very long time and then it was risky. Ford and Chrysler used synthetic enamel and GM used acrylic lacquer.  Now, there are a multitude of different paints but you want to check their compatibility before you start mixing them. As you have found out, even using the same brands doesn't always work. Your easiest solution would be to find your base color in an enamel paint and use that for touch-up.

Bob,

Thanks for taking the time to contact VHT.

Yes, you could use SP145 Engine Clear Gloss.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best Regards,
Roger
